Freedom Summer, My Parents, and Me

One of the most important things I did in my life was to work in Laurel, Mississippi during Freedom Summer. It was also important to go back during Christmas vacation that year, taking students from my college in Minnesota, Carleton, to continue to share in the experience and to deliver books for the Freedom School Library and to try to help get some of the local people out of jail, as well as to let people know that we were not just in it for the summer. I am still proud that my 32-year old son is proud of what his mom did during the 60's although I didn't do it for recognition but because it had to be done.
