CORE, Freedom Rider, Texas, 1961-64
Current Residence: Nelson, BC, Canada

The Freedom Ride, in 1961 to Texas, was the last of the Freedom Rides, but showed the work needed to continue to change the racist structure in the southern states. We were well trained, very disciplined, and shared a special bond in that we were going to a state considered to be "liberal". It was anything but. It remains one of the most memorable events in my life, and I am proud to say I may have been the only Canadian freedom rider. I was subpoenaed before the House Un-American Activities Committee on my return. It took another 9 years of harrassment before I returned to Canada. I have remained in the movement for peace and social justice.
