I was in college and Hosea Williams came to recruit students for SCOPE. I was very moved and signed up.
Several of us were assigned to Lunenburg County in VA. We worked with Nathaniel Lee Hawthorne of NAACP, canvassing the area to talk to people about registering to vote. We also started a Freedom School in anticipation of the coming school desegregation of the 2nd and 12th grades. We canvassed for this with the idea that it would be helpful for students to work with white teachers.
Students did a lot of writing and speaking. So powerful to hear their stories, many about brothers who were serving in Vietnam.
