Washington Booker III
(Deceased)

SCLC 1963 Alabama

In the beginning, I went to downtown Birmingham every day and stood in the crowd and sang the songs. And finally one day I get so caught up in the singing in the spirit that I decided I would go to jail also.

What did it mean to me? It made me proud to see my people stand up and risk their lives to fight for the right to be treated like human beings. I have been a part of every major empowerment movement that has taken place in the black community since 1963.
