Hi Douglas,

I am reaching out with a heavy heart to offer my deepest, most intimate condolences on the passing of your father, Prof. William "Bill" Hansen. I know how profoundly he shaped lives, including my own, and I can only imagine the depth of your loss right now.

Prof. Bill was more than a teacher to me; he was a life-changing mentor and a fundamental part of who I am today. When I was studying Petroleum Chemistry at AUN, he gently but powerfully convinced me to transition to Politics. He then taught me the subject with such passion and clarity over those years that it redirected my entire path. He opened my eyes to international politics, decolonization thinkers like Frantz Fanon, and the complex realities of power, conflict, and the state in Nigeria and beyond, work I continued with him as a research assistant on Boko Haram and religious extremism.

He saw potential in me when I needed it most and became an angel in my life, an enduring source of guidance, intellectual rigor, and quiet kindness. Even in his later challenges with ageing, his spirit remained so strong; Ill never forget him using his crutches to come support me through an emotional moment at Kingsleys wedding. That was pure Bill.always there, always caring.

Your father poured decades into teaching at American University of Nigeria; 20 years of shaping minds and hearts. He retired not long ago, but his influence continues through every student whose life he touched, every idea he sparked, and every value he instilled. He changed my life in the most meaningful ways, and I will carry that gratitude forever.

Please know that many of us who knew him are holding you and your family in our thoughts with love and warmth during this painful time. His legacy of intellect, compassion, and impact lives on vividly. If theres anything I can do; or if you ever want to share stories or memories, I am always here.

With sincere sympathy and affection,

Basil Anthony Abia, June 2026
