I was on the SNCC payroll as a field secretary and spent crucial days and weeks before, during, and after the Lowndes County (AL) election in Lowndes, living with local people, working on the election, and on that night protecting (with a gun) the home of one of the Lowndes Country Freedom Organization (LCFO) candidates.
