An Episcopal priest, Rev. Bowie worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during Freedom Summer in McComb MS. He stayed in the state and continued his civil rights work in a variety of ways. He was involved in anti-poverty, economic development, and political empowerment efforts.
