With a sad heart, I report that Freedom Fighter George Smith, Jr. of Ft. Wayne, Indiana entered the spirit world on Monday, April 29, 2013 in his home with his daughter Ramona at his side. George suffered a debilitating stroke in October 2102 and was rehabilitating well until he developed a fatal infection about a month ago.

George was the Meridian, Miss. project director for 2 1/2 years following Freedom Summer — organizing for CORE all over east central MS including Neshoba County. George was a courageous, calm and dedicated leader. He worked closely with with James Chaney and Mickey Schwerner starting the Meridian project before they were murdered by the KKK mob on June 21, 1964.

I am so sorry to see this. George and I kept in touch in the past few years. I have photos of him in his old CORE Freedom shirt, which I took when we were at one of the Memorial Services for Civil Rights Martyrs in Philadelphia, MS. George and I worked together and he put up with my youthful foibles back in those days. He was a true and brave Freedom Fighter.

In freedom, Nina Boal
