Dr. Gilbert R. Mason Sr. was a Movement veteran and author of Beaches, Blood, and Ballots organized voter registration drives and desegregation protests on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1960s.

I did not know Dr. Mason, but my friend, the late Curtis Styles, was with him when the Movement integrated the beaches in Biloxi. Curt told me it was, for him, the most dangerous work he did, because when you were surrounded on 3 sides by racists, with only the Gulf of Mexico to escape to you could not imagine a safe way out.
