Dear Tanya,
Thank you so much for calling me this morning to let me know that your Daddy, Mr. Walter Bruce, passed last night. I'm so sorry for your loss and that of your whole family and of the entire Holmes Movement.
He was strong and gentle, inspired and inspiring, a devoted and dedicated leader. He is living on in all he touched in his 50+ years of building an incredibly successful Holmes County Freedom Democratic Party.
Sturdy, able, calm, ever-sweet and of great consequence, Mr. Bruce nourished, protected, and quartet-sang for many of us.
Those in Holmes Co. and Mississippi who didn't know him directly or of the deeds that came from his energy and life have reaped the fruits of his beloved work.
May these times of grieving, funeral and ritual preparations strengthen us all in our understanding of the love and life of Walter Bruce.
I wish I could be with you on the 29th. I've wanted to visit Holmes, but I don't know that I can travel right now. I hope my words can help us celebrate his life.
