For those who do not know her, she was and is one of the "silent" veterans of the Civil Rights Movement who was a SNCC field secretary and directed the SNCC office in Hattiesburg in 1962. Her father, D.K. Bivins, worked with Mr. Vernon Dahmer and the local Hattisburg NAACP.
She is survived by one daughter, Erika Dennis Young, a son-in-law-Brian Young, a brother Frank Bivins, and two grandchildren, Jalen Young and Julian Young, who was named after one of Mattie's beloved friend, Julian Bond.

I am so sorry and so sad. My Mother and Matties Father were cousins. She worked in the Delta in summer, 1962 before Dave swooped in and married her. We were Tougaloo students at the same time.
Will the circle be unbroken...
