Heather Tobis Booth:
Do you think marches, sit-ins, and other demonstrations helped or hurt the movement? These tactics helped build the movement. They built the confidence and solidarity of those who were in it and those who shared the values of those who took action. They built support by exposing the ugly face of the opposition and the moral position of those taking action. A movement is always built by action and reaction. Even moments of opposition and backlash, often helped to build the movement. The key issue is identifying who has the power to grant the change that we need. Then finding the tactics that build the power and unity of those in the struggle for that change and that persuade or limit the power of those who currently are unaccountable in their exercise of power.

Do you ever regret taking part in the civil rights movement?

Bruce Hartford:
No, it was the best thing I ever did in my life.
