Hello, SCFP friends!
It's been a whirlwind month for the SCFP, with all sorts of trips and visitors. Folks may say that Delta kids are isolated, but our kids go plenty of places!
We enjoyed our third annual spring drama tour, kicked off with two shows on our very own stage at the LEAD Center. The grand opening was spectacular! We had a full house (we can fit about 90 people), and our audience was diverse in every way you could imagine -- racially, economically, geographically, generationally... We had parents sitting next to former civil rights activists sitting next to Teach for America teachers sitting next to local Sunflower County folks, white and black. Best of all, our kids rocked -- and they taught the audience a great deal about the history of school integration.
After the LEAD Center shows, we returned to the friendly confines of Dallas and Houston, where our kids stayed with a remarkable bunch of welcoming host families. Kudos to Julie Tobolowsky in Dallas and Shawn Raymond in Houston for setting up the trips and helping us raise more than $5000. The kids had a great time visiting the SHAPE Center, touring the Dallas Holocaust Museum, riding horses and taking hay rides at the Cielito Ranch, and so much more. I'm attaching a picture of our kids with folks at the Ranch, including our trip sponsors, Jonathan and Jeanie Ross.
The best thing about taking these trips and staying with host families is that our kids make connections with fantastic people all over the country. Last year, we did a performance at Emery Weiner, a predominantly Jewish school in Houston; last month, a group of 40 ninth graders from Emery Weiner came to Sunflower to visit our kids and the LEAD Center. It was amazing to see how kids who seem to be so different on the surface were able to make friends and have a great time together. Here's a picture from the taekwondo demonstration that our students did for their new friends.
Many of you know about our plans to go to France, and you may have heard rumors about our students' cookbook. Well, after many trials and tribulations in the crucible of self-publishing, "Delta-licious" is here! You may order a copy hot off the press for $13.85 by going to: www.lulu.com/sunflowerfreedom
If you already ordered a cookbook on our drama tour, please tell us which address to send your cookbook to.
Thanks so much for all your support!
