THE ROAR FOUNDATION, INC. is sponsoring a Civil Rights Movement Conference March 10 - 13, 2005. A gathering of Civil Rights Veterans, Politicians, Organizational/Business/Community Leaders, Educators, Senior Citizens, Students and Citizens from across the nation will convene at the future site of Amzie Moore/Fannie Lou Hamer National Heritage Center & Civil Rights Museum. It is located at 1101 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Cleveland, Mississippi across the street from Amzie Moore Park.
The Legendary Victoria Gray Adams will join us as will Civil Rights Veterans Charles McLaurin, Dr. L. C. Dorsey, Mrs. Unita Blackwell, Mr. Owen H. Brooks and Mr. Lawrence Guyot among others. There will be workshops to adopt a process for structuring and developing the Moore/Hamer National Heritage Center & Museum. Amzie Moore and Fannie Lou Hamer were two giants and national legends who just so happened to be from the Mississippi Delta. The Moore/Hamer Museum will be reflective of the scope of their work nationally and internationally including first hand accounts from the people who worked in the trenches with them.
The Amzie Moore/Fannie Lou Hamer National Heritage Center & Civil Rights Museum will serve as a Civil Rights Educational Mecca throughout the Mississippi Delta. Moreover, It will provide a vital link to historic tourism trips between Memphis, TN and Jackson, MS.
THE ROAR FOUNDATION, INC. kicked off its nation-wide membership drive with Dr. Maya Angelou talking about 'rainbows in our clouds' on December 5, 2004 at Delta State University. It was at Delta State, in 1940, Amzie Moore attended the Cotton Makers Jubilee. He would go on to help organize programs and people whose impact is still being felt today.
Also, participating in the conference is the Sunflower County Freedom School who will perform a dramatic play about "School Desegregation", Sisters committed to our Past, Present and Future (Hattiesburg, MS) Dave Dallas, Executive Director of Bologna Performing Arts Center @ Delta State University and Dr. Susan Glisson, William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation @ University of Mississippi. Dr. Paul Richards, son of Harvey Richards (filmographer of We'll Never Turn Back) will discuss the formation of the documentary and it's sequel, 'Dream Deferred' before audience view 'We'll Never Turn Back'. Some of ROAR'S supporters from the Civil Rights Movement is included in the documentary and will be available for a Q & A session, immediately, afterwards. Mr. Lawrence Guyot is a Consultant.
ROAR'S Fannie Lou Hamer Steering Committee will also meet during the conference. Members include Civil Rights Veterans Mrs. Victoria Gray Adams, Mr. Charles McLaurin (Chairman), Mr. Owen Brooks and Mrs. Unita Blackwell, Rulevilles Alderwoman Hattie Jordan, Mr. Jimmy Lacy (Hamers Nephew), Vergie Hamer Faulkner (Hamers Daughter), Sunflower County Board of Supervisor Edgar Donahue, Mississippi State Senator Willie Simmons, Mississippi State Representative Sara Thomas, United States Congressman Bennie Thompson, New Jersey Secretary of State Regena Thomas, (former) Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton and Ms. Patricia M. Thompson.. Other members are being added.
United Baptist Church/United Family Life Center reached a partnership agreement on August 28, 2004 with THE ROAR FOUNDATION, INC. to develop the Moore/Hamer National Heritage Center and Museum. Rev. Anyone who was a part of the civil rights movement (especially Mississippi) or had relatives whom was involved is welcome to come to the conference and share their experience.
