THE ROAR FOUNDATION, INC. announces its latest initiative: The Amzie Moore/Fannie Lou Hamer National Heritage Center & Civil Rights Museum located in Cleveland, Mississippi: Home of Amzie Moore.
On August 28, 2004, ROAR and United Family Life Center/United Baptist Church reached a partnership agreement to develop a national civil rights museum and heritage center. Rev. Sammie Rash is the pastor of United Baptist Church and president of ROAR'S Cleveland Chapter. Amzie took Rev. Rash under his wings when Rash was only 14 years old.
The building is less than 4 years old, is, approximately, 17,000 square feet and sits on, approximately, 8 acres of land. It is located at 1101 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive across the street from Amzie Moore Park. (see pictures at www.fannielouhamer.info)
Amzie Moore and Fannie Lou Hamer need your help! ROAR kicked off its nationwide membership drive on December 5, 2004 with Dr. Maya Angelou talking about 'rainbows in our clouds' (see web site) at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.
As a means of support for the museum and heritage center, we are seeking 5000 members at $5.00 per month. To assist ROAR with the development and structuring of the museum, the first "Civil Rights Conference" is scheduled for March 11-13, 2005. We will have quarterly conferences, specifically, to discuss the formation of preserving the legacy of 'the movement.'
Amzie Moore and Fannie Lou Hamer need your help, again! This is a unique chance for the Veterans of the Movement to come and share their experiences and help cultivate those experiences into educational tools.
Thus, ROAR continues to support the development of the Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial Garden. The $100,000 Self-Help Grant was approved July 2004. Mr. Charles McLaurin has accepted the Chairmanship of ROAR'S National Fannie Lou Hamer Steering Committee. Some of the other members include Mrs. Unita Blackwell, former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton and New Jersey Secretary of State Regena Thomas. The Hamer Steering Committee is an ongoing process. You can view the committee list at www.fannielouhamer.info/about_us.html.
ROAR continues to sponsor Annual Fannie Lou Hamer celebrations the first Saturday in every October in Ruleville, MS at the Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial Garden. And, later in the evening of the same day, we co-sponsor with Amzie Moore Estate, Amzie Moore/Fannie Lou Hamer Day at Amzie Moore Park in Cleveland, MS.
