Hello, SCFP friends!
I hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving break, full of pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, football, family...isn't Thanksgiving great? Here at the SCFP, we have much more to be thankful for than just good food. Thanks to folks like you, we have had a great year, particularly in terms of our LEAD Center. Now that the interior renovations are complete, we have begun the construction of a new wing, which will include a special area for all the beautiful, engraved bricks that folks from around the country have donated (if you'd like to get one, there's still time you can get one with a $100 donation).
We are thankful too for all the local folks who help us provide our students with all kinds of extracurricular activities. This weekend, for example, we will be able to take six students up to Delta State University to hear Maya Angelou speak thanks to Luther Brown and the Delta Center for Culture and Learning. Another fun activity has been pottery class, which is offered for our students courtesy of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. On Wednesday afternoons, SCFP kids troop to Greenville for a couple hours of creativity and fun. In our age of the relentless pursuit of higher test scores, we sometimes forget how important the arts can be.
Many of you have expressed support and encouragement for our trip to France next December. The kids have to raise $1,500 each, and they are doing all kinds of things to raise money, from raking leaves to bake sales to cat care. One thing we soon will offer is a special Delta cookbook full of recipes from SCFP kids, parents, grandparents, and staff. The proceeds will go to the kids and their France fund. It should be out before Christmas, so reserve a spot under the tree. :) I'll send more information later.
Last but not least, if you happen to be going anywhere exciting, send us a postcard we are decorating our Center with postcards from all over the world as a way to teach geography. Thanks!
Take care,
Chris
