Sunlower County Freedom Project News

Hello, my fellow Americans!

No matter who is president, we here at the SCFP keep right on moving. Last week, we enjoyed our annual Halloween party, complete with a "haunted dojang" designed by our older kids. Because they have been reading Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," they concocted the story of the "Sunflower Witch Trials" to scare the wits out of the younger students. I'm attaching a picture of one of the witch hunt ringleaders, Chris Perkins, with his ghoulish prize. It's all in good fun... :)

Some of you may have heard of the SCFP's latest audacious travel plans — we're going to take some kids to France! We believe strongly in the power of travel to give students a deeper appreciation of the beauty and opportunity that exists in the world, and we wanted our students to gain the perspective that accompanies experience in a foreign land. Why France? Why not? This semester, we have been offering a special French class on Wednesday nights — the county high school currently has no foreign language teacher — taught by a long-time supporter and top-notch French teacher, Tiffany Tidwell, so our kids will be linguistically ready by the time of the trip in December 2005. Each student must raise $1,500 in order to go, and the SCFP has set up a lawn care business and several fundraisers to help interested kids raise the money. If they have the will, there is a way, right?

As I write, our contractors are outside beginning work on our expansion project, to which many of you have contributed quite generously. If all goes well, we should have 50% more usable space by next March! The increased space means that we can recruit more students into the SCFP, and we will have the space to run new and varied summer programs from the LEAD Center. Just a year ago, the lot next door was an abandoned juke joint, and it will soon be another colorful part of our Center. It's exciting!

A special thank-you goes out to T.J. Abrams and the SCFP's growing cast of staff alumni at the University of North Carolina, who planned a special campus fundraiser for our kids. We always appreciate the support!

As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments. We love to hear from you.

Take care,
Chris — Chris Myers
