This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which signaled the demise of legal segregation and changed the course of public education in the United States. Please join the Southern Regional Council (SRC) at a symposium and gala awards dinner in Atlanta on Thursday, April 29, 2004.
Symposium. 8:00am-4:30pm; Georgia State University Student Center. The Southern Regional Council will present a full day of workshops and panel presentations, bringing parents and students together with legal, education, government and community representatives to explore strategies to ensure high quality education and achievement for all students. Featured speakers include: Professor Pedro Noguera; The Honorable Horace Ward; and Professor Leland Ware. Symposium tickets are $35 for individuals and $80 for attorneys seeking CLE credit (processing fees for 6 CLE/1 Professionalism are sent to the GA Bar). Tables of ten are $350.
Gala Awards Dinner. 6:00pm, Cocktail Reception. 7:00pm, Dinner. J.W. Marriott-Lenox. SRC will host a dinner and awards presentation chaired by former Secretary of Education Dick Riley and emceed by Michele Norris, Host, All Things Considered, NPR. The President's Igniting a Passion for Justice Award will be presented Oliver Hill, attorney for the Virginia case that was combined to become Brown v Board. The Wiley A. Branton Vanguard Award will be presented to Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, LLP for their legal efforts to obtain quality education for students in South Carolina. A Corporate-Community Partnership Award will be presented to the Georgia YouthBuild Coalition and The Home Depot for their efforts to build the vocational skills of Georgia's high school dropouts. A second Corporate-Community! Partn ership Award will be award to Clemson University's Call Me MISTER Program and its corporate supporters for their work to bring more African-American males to the ranks of elementary school teachers in South Carolina. Gala dinner tickets are $150. Tables of ten are $1500.
