First International Conference on Race: Racial Reconciliation

October 1-4, 2003, the William Winter Institute hosts a four-day conference exploring racial reconciliation in international contexts. Presentations examine how local action-oriented initiatives resolve conflict around the globe.

The event marks the end of the Open Doors commemorative year at the University of Mississippi.

Begun Oct. 1, 2002, the Open Doors observance is devoted to recognizing the courage of Dr. James Meredith and all faculty, staff, students, and alumni who worked for inclusion and greater opportunity and access to higher education.

The conference begins Wednesday with a community dinner in the Circle, featuring an address by Nicholas Katzenbach, former deputy attorney general of the United States under John F. Kennedy. The event hearkens back to the Open Doors' first day dinner on the grounds attended by some 2,500 people of widely diverse backgrounds.

On Thursday, the conference hosts various panels and workshops especially for educators, showcasing methods for teaching about race. Friday's events include presentations by practitioners and academics from across the globe who reflect on local methods of conflict resolution and share insights on reconciliation from a variety of perspectives.

Saturday, Oct. 3, features a plenary session and keynote address by the Rev. James Lawson, a noted proponent of reconciliation and prominent civil rights activist. Among other highlights of the conference are presentations by University of Mississippi students on the overall theme.

The conference is intended to help galvanize the goals of the year of Open Doors, which began by noting our own unique history and concludes by considering our commonalities with communities around the world, attempting to build inclusive, successful societies.

The conference places the University at the forefront of international dialogue on racial reconciliation.
