~ THE CALL ~

Our YOUTH, Past CONTRIBUTIONS,

and Present CHALLENGES

~ A Call To Action ~

The theme - “The Pursuit of Quality Education In The Ongoing Movement For Human Rights: A Call To Action” - of the second annual conference of the VETERANS OF THE MISSISSIPPI CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT will once again engage our youth so that they can fully understand our past struggles and challenge them to become active participants in the ongoing struggle for human rights.

You are invited to join colleagues from across the country in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 22-24, 2007, to issue a national call to action in pursuit of quality education for all in the ongoing movement for human rights in America. As Brother Bob Moses has said, “In the 1960s, the key issue was the right to vote for our people. In today’s high-tech society, the key issue is the right to mathematics literacy for all our children.”

The primary focus of the conference will examine the role of youth in the overall development of the civil and human rights movement. The conference will also address the contemporary challenges and issues – social, political, economic, religious and educational – facing our youth.

This promises to be an historic gathering, and we warmly invite you to join old comrades, contemporary intellectuals, youthful activists, and the people to explore and discuss with us important new directions in the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights.

December 16, 2006

Dear Veterans & Supporters:

You have received this letter because you are either a veteran of the civil rights movement in Mississippi, a strong supporter of human rights, or a supporter of both. We bring you greetings from Jackson, Mississippi where the struggle is ongoing. We are now in the process of continuing what we began last year at the 1st annual conference. In any case, we are writing to inquire about your continued willingness to participate in this effort with us.

We are still having gatherings to memorialize our fallen comrades and devising strategies to continue the work for which they made the ultimate sacrifice.

We are now organizing our 2nd Annual Conference to bring together those who wish to continue working with and supporting us. We anticipate heavy attendance and hope that you will join us in this continued fight for equality. Because we know that quality Education is the Gateway to Real Power in this country, we have chosen to concentrate on this notion as a central theme, but it is now a call to action. While other issues will occupy our time as well, we are looking forward to strategizing about how to make our tax dollars work for us and the younger generation that has until now not benefited from them for the most part.

With these thoughts and concerns in mind, we invite you to join us in Jackson, Mississippi from March 22-24, 2007. Jackson State University, under the leadership and guidance of President Ronald Mason, Jr., has partnered with us and will host the event at the JSU E-Center, 1230 Raymond Road, Jackson, MS. Please indicate on the enclosed card whether you will attend. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours in the Struggle,

Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement
