Keynote Speaker: SNCC Freedom Fighter, Willie Wazir Peacock

Willie Wazir Peacock is one of the most important SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) Freedom Fighters, who helped lead the struggle in the state of Mississippi for the right to vote. Wazir, a native Mississippian, born in the small town of Charleston, in Tallahatchie County, the same place where Emmett till was lynched in 1955, is one of our unsung heroes, who America owes a great debt for his courage in the face of beatings, imprisonment, torture and death.

Wazir will speak of his little known experiences as a warrior, on the front line of defense against the Klan and The White Citizens Council, along with other Freedom Fighters, both living and dead, such as the late Fannie Lou Hamer, the late James Forman, the late Sam Block, Lawrence Guyot, Bob Moses, the late Victoria Gray Adams, Hollis Watkins, Jimmy Travis, the late James Chaney and many others.

In the late 1960's, as SNCC Field Secretaries, Wazir and the late Sam Block organized voter registration and voter education in numerous counties in Mississippi, such as Greenwood (La Flore County), Carol, Holmes, Humphreys and Montgomery. These places were known as hotbeds of racism, segregation and widespread police brutality against civil rights workers. Both Wazir and Sam endured many confrontations with the police and were jailed on numerous occasions.
